I was at a hotel when a man and his adult daughter were checked in and shown to their adjacent rooms. The hotel staff member who showed them to their rooms apologised because the room safe in the man's room was broken and could not be locked.

Now this is where the story gets a little hard to believe. The man then put $AU3,000 in his broken safe although his daughter next door had an operational one. Around 2 days later he went to reception and told them his money had been stolen and in fact accused the staff member of taking it.

The police were called and an investigation ensued which included all the staff members with access to that room having their homes searched. Nothing was found and the police had no evidence so no charges were laid. The man was given a copy of the report for his insurance claim.

He then had a big tantrum and demanded free accommodation for his stay which was not forthcoming.

The rest of the guests had a few doubts about the whole thing.

1)Why put money in a safe which you have been informed does not lock and in which the mechanism was visibly missing leaving a big hole in the door.

2)Leaving aside honesty, why would the staff member who pointed out this to you then take the money drawing down suspicion on himself unless he was totally stupid which this staff member plainly is not.

3) Why not use your daughter's safe?

In these cases nobody can ever be really sure can they? Except that is the people involved,
