I took my iPhone to Bali this year. Before I left Australia, I cancelled roaming, unlocked my iPhone for free by ringing Optus and as well cancelled voicemail.

Before I reached Bali, I removed the Optus Sim with a needle. In Bali, I bought a local Sim and cancelled celluar downloads. I then used free WiFi at such places as Gloria Jeans (password required)in Kuta Square and Simpang Cafe (no password required) in Jalan Legian.

All my contacts in my iPhone were available. Just make sure that the Australian contacts are shown as +61 followed by the landline or mobile number leaving out the first zero from the mobile number or the first zero from the STD prefix for land lines.

Sending an SMS to Australia cost me 4 cents a message and even phonecalls using the cheap prefix were cheap as well.
