There are some fabulous places to stay on Lombok itself, and much more 'to do' than on the Gili. Accommodation is also much better value on Lombok than on the Gili, especially if you are looking at peak season (June to August). I post on Lombok Lovers forum, happy to answer questions there or here if you want. I've been travelling to Lombok for nearly 20 years and lived there for a while.
