I've never spent anywhere near US$300 a day when in Bali. I struggle to spend $100 a day on average. But I do stay a lot longer than 3-4 days - usually a month.
Can't really comment on the beach as I rarely ever go, either in Bali or at home. I have seen it both clean and filthy at different times though.
As for the bogan element, it's not just Aussies. It just really depends where you stay. I stayed in a totally different area than usual this last trip and encountered super loud pool bogans for the first time ever. And they weren't Aussies. They were Germans and it was on Nyepi day.
