Personal in-room safes are as safe as the amount of people who know or can get to know the code to get in if you have forgotten your own personal code!
Usually reception box safes need 2 keys to open, 1 you will have and 1 the staff will have.
If using an in-room safe you may be able to use a padlock to the outside door of the wardrobe (they are usually in wardrobes) that only you have the key to....okay until you lose the key!
When using any safes put your money into seperate envelopes or bank bags and not all together, muddle your things up, don't have them all secure together with an elastic band, easy to take the lot then. Google for more tips of safety when using hotel safes.
