taxis are cheap in Bali. Last year a trip from the memorial down jl legian to just outside Kuta square was 8,500. Caught other taxis (other than bluebird) and all ok except for the od one. Driver didnt put the meter on and told me not to worry, its ok, so I didnt. He wanted 20,000 for a trip that I figured was around 7,000. He complained when I handed him 8k and I said "you not put meter on how you know how much it costs". I explained it should have been around 7k and handed him 8k he complained and I said "if you had put the meter on as I asked", I would have given you a tip, he disgruntedly took the money no problem.

A tip is to make sure you have small notes as a con some taxi drivers use is they havnt got any change. Got caught once.

Depending on your bargaining skills and what you are prepared to pay, on our last day (HOW do they know) we were offered straight up 4 singlets for 100k thought this was pretty cheap asked for 5 for 100K just too see what would happen? a QUICK ok ok and deal was done.

If you do any half day or full day trips, best to negotiate a price with the driver before going.
