I've found that the best investment on departure is to pay a porter to take your bags on a trolley. They've always put the bags onto the x-ray machine for me, taken them back off and escorted me to the check-in counter for my flight. This past trip home a couple of weeks ago, he even waited in line with me and put my bags onto the check-in belt for me.
