walking distance if you stay within and relatively close to the rectangular shape of Jl Hanoman (oneway street) Jl Monkey Forest (oneway street)and JL Raya Ubud.
No taxis in Ubud but you can negotiate with the many "you want transport" drivers.
I have heard of some fantastic places to stay out of town, which provide a shuttle bus service into town, however, you need to go and return at set times. Like you, I prefer to be in a central location. Lots of "homestay" type places along Hanoman and some of them are quite good. Last visit I popped in to take a peek a boo at a few. One homestay on the left hand side of Jl Hanoman (heading south)about half way down looked surprising good. Had a crystal clear sparkling pool, neat and tidy gardens and if you weren't too fussy the rooms were basic, neat and clean with aircon and very cheap. Good luck with it all, I know the feeling as I am doing the same at the moment finding accommo in Seminyak.
