Eastern Bali is regrettably known to be one of the poorest regions in Bali, partly because of the harsh conditions of course.
In the past we have visited schools in the hills with donations (what else would you expect from M.T.??) and the teachers stole half of what was intended for the kids!!
Tourism does bring in some cash to the region, but its like the cash is on the seaward side and the poverty is on the "hillward" side.
When you see 5 or 6 year olds hauling water up those semi mountains you realise just a bit about how tough life can be for some.
