I just got back a bit over a week ago and stayed at Bakungsari which is in the general area you're talking about. I paid AUD$31 a night for a superior room, which included breaky each day. Not sure if they have connecting rooms or not, but it may be worth a look? 5-10min easy stroll to get to Matahari, Kuta art market etc.
The other part I enjoyed was all the local food options nearby - a lot of my meals were around the $2 mark and much tastier than the restaurant equivalents for 3-4 times the price. Not for everyone I guess but there's plenty of restaurants close by too.
