Petrol costs the equivalent of forty eight cents aussie per litre for Premium and around one dollar per litre for Pertamax (higher octane). However because the traffic is so bad the vehicles use significantly more fuel per kilometre because you are nearly always in first or second gear with occasional changes up to third.
The price of fuel was supposed to increase by 30% on the first of April but the government ran out of balls and decided not to increase the cost to protect their own political backsides (same s..t different country). The problem here is that the Indonesian Government subsides fuel to the tune of 17 BILLION US dollars per year, money they could have used for improving infrastructure.
Indonesia has the 4th cheapest petrol in the world so I dont think I would be haggling too hard over a dollar or two for fuel. Many drivers charge for fuel if you are planning a long trip round the island. If you suffer from paranoia like some other forumites, stand at the bowser when filling up to avoid any chance of paying extra.
