Yes, back in 1981(my very first time in Bali)we were told to take jeans with us to swap with local stall holders. I did take a pair or two and swapped them for a pile of sarongs to give as gifts to my girlfriends.
In those days the locals were not big into western clothes but look at them now...............department stores full of them!!!
Maybe the couple you saw were in a time warp or something? lol
