When Garuda used to fly out of Brisbane, (boo hoo) I always phoned and put in a seat request. They say it is not guaranteed but 100% of the time I got the seat I requested. Worth a try, also you are then booked on that seat on your return flight.
I really wish Garuda would resume flying out of Brisbane, it was so good, great flight and excellent service.
