I agree with Fiona, for first time travellers, it can be a huge culture shock. The best advice I can give you is to go with an open and accepting mind. This is the beauty of travelling to experience how other people live.
Having travelled a lot, my first trip to Bali was a little overwhelming as it is an underdeveloped country and some of the sights did make me feel a little sad. After a few days, you get used to it and the warmth, happiness and friendliness of the people with their neverending smiles takes the sting out of some of the bad sights. Heaps of people will talk to you and heaps will want to sell you something. Just smile and say no if you dont want it. Bargaining is the way of life in Bali and you will need to do it so you are not targeted and taken for a sucker.
We did get ripped off but we learned quickly. Be sure to always negotiate a clear price before you commit to anything. Everyone will push their luck with you, especially if they know it is your first time to Bali.
We found talking to others at our motel was invaluable. The people we met were all very helpful and gave us good suggestions of what to do, where to go and how the get there.
One thing we loved to do was try as many of the restaurants as we could, because they are all so different and the food is delicious.
The best advice I can give you if you get a little culture shock is to not worry, just RELAX and always remember you can always find an internet cafe and seek advice on this Forum.
August is the coolest and dryest month of the year. December is in the wet season.
I love Bali, so I would go for as long as I can. I never want to go home.
For a first timer not to miss, SHOPPING at "Mataharis" in Kuta square.
I hope you have a great trip !
