Do you know what the name of the rafting company you went with was?
Bali Discovery (BDT) is a travel agent, they book the rafting through a separate company who actually operate the rafting tours and there are now several on the Ayung River. As you say they all start (and finish) at various points.

The other busy river is the Telaga Waja; Sobek also operates there as does Bali International Rafting. The river itself is narrower and more difficult with one particularly big drop. It isn't set up for the big numbers that travel on the Ayung.

Re "on the street" prices, there are some ridiculously cheap rafting prices floating around (sorry bout the bad pun) but as with so many things, you get what you pay for. When things go well you often don't notice the difference but if there's a problem it's a lot more obvious why you're paying the extra.
