Depends on their ages, of course. Doing a day trip you will be caught up with all the other day trippers (Beatles song just getting into my head & I know it won't leave for days - grr).

Best to stay for a night or 2. The Rough Guide has a list of good things to do with kids. Studio Perak (a chain of silver shops) has classes for over 8s to make silver jewellery. Another place (Pondok Peran) has kids classes in Balinese dancing & gamelan ... etc. Ubud caters well for kids.

Your family could do a bike ride for a day - plenty of info here - where they will get to go to a plantation which sells the "poo" coffee - kids always love that. They also love the bike ride, too. And learning about the volcano eruptions & seeing the results is also usually interesting.

Antonio Blanco's museum just over the bridge might also be interesting for kids - he was one weird guy - we met him.

The rice fields walk is well worth doing.

The markets are great in the early morning before the tour buses & day trippers arrive. The kids might find it interesting - I always do!

You could do a drive to Tegagalang markets - spread over several ks - lots of cool shops to stop at that kids might like & lunch at Kampung Cafe is a must.

Oh, so many great things to do in Ubud. I have been going there since'83 & have not yet gone to the Monkey Forest. Never get bored with Ubud. And, BTW, Ubud is still pretty hot & humid - marginally less so than on the coast.
