Ubud has Markets, food, scenery and jewellery.
Warung Murni is worth a stop and many others along with Naughty Nuris.
There is jewellery there or wholesalers along the way.
Try the traditional market at the top of Monkey Forest Rd. (probably a better end of the street for you) or nip over to Sukuwati for a slightly different market experience.
Hire one of the drivers that has in seat video in the car and play the kids favourites as this can lessen the "are we there yet" factor.
Ubud is cooler during the hotter part of the year and a nice respite from the rigours of the south.
