You can buy skype credit and call overseas via skype on your computer or a skype app if you have an iphone/smart phone. You buy skype credit as you need it - I think it starts at $16 minimum each time you top it up - but the credit does not expire each month.
You can also use the skype credit to send text messages.
If you dont want to use a computer or you dont have a smart phone you can also sign up for "skype to go" within skype which allocates an Australian local number to an overseas number. you call the australian number from either your mobile or landline, enter your skype password and then it connects you to the overseas number that you have associated with the australian local number.
When calling via a computer or phone app you only pay for the overseas call. when using the skype to go option you also pay for a local call - but if using a landline or mobile with unlimited local phonecalls this wont be a problem.
Sorry I dont know about pre-paid sim's as I have never used them in Australia. I tried calling cards at one stage but I found the call quality was very poor especially when dialling from an australian mobile to an indonesian mobile..
