We always take cash. Leave bulk of it in room safe and just cash out what we need as we need it. You can get money changed before you go at the post office, at no charge, but you will get a much lower exchange rate. They have to make their money somehow! Pay the VOA in AUD and get change in Rp to pay for taxi to hotel.
