it can be started a day or two before entering malarious area: Malarone one to two days, doxycycline 2 days, Larium one week. The risk is less than in the more remote parts of indonesia but greater than Bali and depends on where you're staying, what you're doing, your general health, your age (and if you're pregnant). If you've had conflicting advice and are concerned, consult a travel medicine doctor. Soon.
