When our son was a few months old he had to have Doctor-prescribed medication when flying because of ear problems. Fortunately, the meds put him to sleep so we all arrived at our destination unstressed.
Once the meds became unnecessary medically, he'd ask for them as he, like most kids, hate flying & he preferred to sleep through it. He just had to learn how to behave &, of course, a bag full of interesting & new (non-noisy) toys & non-sugary snacks helped hugely.
I guess these days we'd take a portable DVD, favourite DVDs & headphones.
