Can you Aussies not just send it off to have extra pages added? I have done this with my british passport.
Also, re the additional length of passport. My (british) passport is valid for 10 years, and 10 months :-) I assume it was just an error when they were processing it as my previous passport had 7 years left on it when i renewed. (some idiot friend wrote on, and tore a page out of it! - which didnt impress customs officers too much :-) )
