We stayed in two bedroom apartment, $220 per night. If you paying roughly around $100 per hotel room per night, it works out well worth paying roughly same to have that extra bit of room. We have booked adjoining rooms at hotel previously and that is all you get, a room with bed and bathroom with usually a small balcony. Apartments have a large living area plus kitchen with good sized balcony so not under each others feet. I would think with younger children, all the better to have a living room with big flat screen tv and dvd player plus kitchen if you wanted to do up a snack for kids.
It's all about choosing what's right for you at the time. Beach Melati was great choice for us with 16 & 17 year old and we thought good value for money.
Wife and I going again end of April with my sister coming with us. But this trip we booked two rooms at hotel as we and my sister will prefer our own privacy at end of spending all day together. Plus my sister having not been to Bali for over 25 years is type of person who will prefer larger hotel complex with larger pool area for chance to meet and chat with others and have a bit more social interaction (gas bag).
Cheers
