The situation with Wi fi is that you are on a Newtork that is not your own. With Norton your are protected against viruses and spyware rather than someone connecting with your computer and accessing information, which is the risk with using unknown wi fi.
What can happen is the "evil twin" whereby you think you are connecting to a trusted wi fi network, you go about your business and meanwhile you are giving passwords etc..to an unknown 3rd party.
My advise it to be careful especially when accessing bank details
