Cash if lost or stolen is gone forever. There are plenty of CBA ATMs on the coastal tourist strip. If your usual debit card has a substantial amount of money on it then consider getting some other card with a set limit. I use a CBA Travel Card but there are other options.
I only take cash I can afford to lose. Use my CBA Travel Card (can take out Rp 3 million at many ATMs) & have backup debit & credit cards as well as some cash. The charges are reasonable. But do do your homework & decide which is best for you.
Re: in-room safes - I have one at home & they are easy to access for anyone with the pass key - ie, just about any hotel staff.
I put some money & a few things in the in-room safe & hide other valuables in various places in my locked bag - my underwear washing bag is a fave LOL.
DO be sure to get good Travel Ins.
