My son also went to Bali on schoolies in 2010 and had a great time, but his group had 2 parents who went to make sure the boys had back up should they need help -and yes they did when they went to the assistance of a young Aussie guy who was battered and bleeding and having his wallet rifled through while in the circle k. The mums were summoned to the shop by a worried shop keeper, a gang of bali youths were waiting outside to bash the boys (how dare they stick their noses in to help another aussie out)they got back to the hotel and laid low for a while after security told them that was the way to go.
It was a wake up call to me that the Bali I know is different at schoolies time, my daughter is going next year, so I think that it is ok as long as boundaries are set and rules are followed and some sort of safety net is in place.
