As the police had her kid under arrest, they could probably demand whatever they wanted! Of course the other kid may have been able to claim on travel insurance, but that's not in the interests of the authorities, I guess.
If it were MY kid, i would pay anything to get him/her out of police custody here. Had she not paid, the little bugger would have still been locked away, I think its fair to assume.
Were the police laughing at her 'stupidity'? possibly.
But what would you do if it were your kid?
