There are numerous surfing spots off the reef- which are apparently really good in December/January. A couple of years ago my daughter had lessons in Sanur. We found a surf school up past the Grand Bali Beach- near where you catch the boats to Nusa Lembongan. The instructor was great- had her up in no time- he is apparently the coach of the Indonesian wind Surfing Team so that could be another option!! Sorry cannot remember his name but there is a well positioned sign so should be easy to find.
