When we were in Bali recently, I didn't really use the data, but unbeknown to me it was on International roaming so my first bill from Telstra was over $1000 data and next month only $450!!! Fortunately Telstra fully credited me.
You have 2 alternatives, (check the archives for instructions from me in Sept 2011) , either turn off international roaming or buy local mini sized sim, especially for iPhone so you can connect to Internet with local provider.
Can also ring your provider at home to ensure international roaming is off.
