a special trip to Ubud might be what you need.

A girls shopping trip in Ubud in the morning with a visit to Cascades restaurant followed by a nail art session at a spa with your mum and daughter would be a very special outing indeed.

Cascades is a place with maximum wow factor where they pay special attention to the small details and are even kid friendly according to this review

Ok it is not cheap but you do not turn 40 every day :D
I spent my 38th birthday here and I was beside myself :P
Here is a snippet from my JBR

"OMG the Viceroy is divine.
The view of the tall palm trees in the valley with the river below were breath taking. The whole view revealed itself as we moved closer step by step. We were impressed by the infinity pool, the beautiful bale with the view on on side and as you look back the majestic reception behind. The attention to detail in this spacious place was incredible, the glassware was particularly beautiful even the table cloths were soft and silky!
Being treated like a queen with the peaceful sophisticated (without being stuffy) atmosphere was the perfect way to begin our Bali adventure and celebrate another year of survival."

... Or an afternoon tea or at the King Cole Bar (Or Sunday Brunch) at the St Regis is also a very memorable way to mark a special occasion. (There were lots of kids when we went.)

An even cheaper alternative to make the occasion memorable is to visit the Turtle conservation and education centre where you can hold and perhaps release a turtle near Sanur.

For dinner you might be lucky enough to catch the Bali Zoo tour at night for a great family outing. But they only run on certain days.

HAPPY birthday!!
