The skin used on djembes in Bali is usually goat skin. I have never heard of dog skin being used. Cow skin can be used but costs more (thicker & stronger). I know this because I have contacts here that make the drums. If you buy a djembe from good supplier then they will have certificate to state how the skin has been treated. If customs in Oz still doesn't allow it then you will have the option to have the skin removed or have it treated. Treatment costs about $60 I think. You can also have djembes made with the plastic skin which has no problems with customs in Oz.
