I always feel safe walking on my own during the day or at night but I do take the following precautions instinctively....

carry your bag firmly and on the opposite side from the road so that it can not be grabbed by a motorbike (not that I have ever seen it actually happen)

the side walks are busy, but be aware that pick pockets are out late at night and they do take advantage of those who may have had a few too many or those that look like easy picking (and they are good at what they do!)

use room safe or hotel safety deposit for passport and some cash, split your remaining cash as others have suggested so if anything is stolen you dont lose the lot

Be very careful changing money - do an archive search for that topic - ALWAYS count your money last as I often find the teller tabling notes at the last minute when I do this

there are some scams that locals can use saying you paid them 5000rp instead of a 50000rp, so always pay attention when you pay and tell them you will call the tourist police if you feel you are being taken advantage of

The beach sellers can be very pushy and try lots of guilt trips and things to get you to spend money with them, just be on your guard for this and never let them start a job without working out the price first.

Dont use the airport porters, there are some recent stories of them pretending to be cusoms officials and overcharging or fining first time tourists
