Depending on where you want to stay, but the best thing to do is book a week in a cheep hotel to your standard?? then start looking for mth by mth villas, rooms, you can get a good A/C hot water room Rp4 mill a mth all furnishings common cooking area or in room.
But once you are first here you do need to address Kitas (Working Visa) before you work, now this is normally done through a company who wish to employ you, if you want to come and look at your options( no employment) a tourist visa or 60 day will do, but please for your sake do not work until you have the Kitas.
