We (a couple + 7 year old) flew to Bali from NZ via Singapore and went straight to two nights at the Safari Park. A great place to start the holiday and get a couple of early nights as we recovered from the long journey and adjusted to the time difference.
Booked directly with Mara River Safari Park, which included airport pickup. The Safari Park was great and we found the two nights to be about right as we arrived in the afternoon of the first day. It enabled us to spread out the various shows/animal feeding times rather than racing around them all in one day. We swam in the hotel pool as well as spending one afternoon at the waterpark (you have to pay an extra 50,000 per person).
We did the night safari and enjoyed feeding the zebras but the lions must have been well-fed as they weren't interested in the meat we offered. The other real highlight was meeting the baby orang-utan - apparently they have 4 young ones that they rotate. The Tsavo lion restaurant is great too - the lions are often asleep but over the course of two dinners and two breakfasts we saw a fair bit of activity.
Next we moved to the Dynasty for 6 nights. This place is great for kids and we spent many hours in the kids pool and on the slide! Personally, I wouldn't choose the Dynasty if we weren't travelling with a child as it's very big and busy with quite a few activities/games organised around the pool. However the location is great, in easy walking Discovery Shopping Centre/Centro department store.
This was our 5th trip to Bali (3rd with a child). On our last trip 3 years ago we stayed at the Hard Rock - thought the Dynasty was a nicer hotel but the Hard Rock's pool area was bigger/nicer. But the deciding factor for us was the Dynasty pool slide. Previously we've stayed in a private villa in Seminyak.
Febris across the road from the Dynastydo great massages - around 175,000 for an hour, but we had to book in for the next day. There are also lots of little cheaper/ more basic places nearby for about 60 - 70,000. They're quite good for a reflexology leg/foot massage at the end of a long day - they're open until almost midnight!
We had a couple of standout meals - at Cocoon in Double 6 and at Ku De Ta. KDT is pretty pricey (about what you'd pay for a really nice meal out in NZ) but is a real treat.
Shopping: Bought kids clothes at Centro and Mataharis, sarongs down Jalan Double Six (between 25,000 and 35,000 each).
Spent a great day at Waterbom park - it was especially good later in the day when the queues died down.
We finished our holiday with 3 days in Singapore and went to Universal Studios - another good family day.
