After my return I have found that lots of people who commented that the Besakih was a cheaper option so I thought the same thing as you.
I found booking direct to be quite difficult actually. It is my only grizzle about this hotel. I never saw a reply to my emails. In fact I wanted to book a double story option for more space but I never worked out how it was possible. It turns out that we were happy with our ground level room anyway.
