I take some cash, a CBA Travel Card with max AUD ($2K I think it is now) on it & my usual debit & credit cards for emergencies only.
Many people take cash only. If cash is stolen, it's gone for ever. I take only what I can afford to lose. I don't mind paying a dollar or so extra to use my CBA Travel Card at ATMs (although I doubt that it costs that much). CBA ATMs are readily found on the coastal tourist strip & in Ubud. When elsewhere I use cash if I run out of Rupiah.
I would never use a debit card that has a substantial credit on it.
Call your Bank & ask what it recommends.
I like the CBA Travel Card (get 2 cards with different pins in case one is lost or stolen) but there are other choices. eg My husband has a separate debit card that he only uses when travelling (he is usually in Indonesia for a few months every year) which I transfer $ to when it gets low.
As I said, there are a few options. But only take cash you can afford to lose & always have a Plan B.
BTW the Travel Card can be used at any ATM in Oz in the unlikely event that you don't use all the $ on it in Bali. It's just a debit card.
