Good on you Sarah for wanting to involve your children in sharing their time and giving to those who are in need'
I have visited orphanages on my last 2 trips. The first was run by a "Christian" lady who was welcoming and had worked all her life for Balinese orphans and those whose families cant support them. My husband and I sat whilst the children sang songs for us.I was not prepared for the overwhelming effect this would have on me.I didnt want fuss,it was lovely but a bit 'staged.'
Our good friend and driver had not been to a Christian orphanage before. We discussed differences and so I asked him to take me to a Hindu orphanage on our next trip.We did this.He took us to one he had heard of in Klungkung. The conditions weren't good and they need so much.I had my sixteen year old son with me and ,for a big toughy, he was really effected too.
The lady who ran it was almost ancient and all the people who worked with her were happy to see us even though we were unannounced. They proudly showed us their pigs and garden and I went through the girls sleeping quarters. The children are happy as and yet have so little. Some are older and are at University. The orphanage staff are so proud!
We took 2 suitcases of clothes.(Our noticeboard at work is where I asked for childrens clothes to take with us.I was inundated and had to sort through over and over.)I take pencils(dont forget the sharpeners), textas, exercise books, toothbrushes, tennis balls, skipping ropes, toys, bandaids, vitamins, books. We stop and pick up bags of rice on the way as well as this is always appreciated.
It is definitely a worthwhile thing to do.Dont be put off by those that have commented earlier. So much is needed by so many and it can feel a bit overwhelming.Everything helps IMO and its not about self gratification.Thank goodness for genuine families who really want to help.
Didnt mean to prattle on,I just felt the need to support you views.
Have a lovely and safe trip,
Susie
