What was the reason it was declined? Your friend should be able to find this out. If you friend is self employed does he have a bank account with money going in an out? Can he show evidence of the business?
Usually when applying you need the following:
* Stat dec from yourself stating that you are covering all expenses inc. airfare, travel ins, accommodation.
* Letter of invitation detailing what you will be doing, where you will be staying and how long you want your friend to come out for, list any special occasions that he may be attending and how long you have known each other for.
* A copy of your bank account showing you can support your friend.
If you friend is self employed
* a letter from him detailing his business, if he has a lease on a shop - show a copy of this. He should also write if he has staff that will be running his business while he is away. Or if he contracts to businesses, try to get letters from them confirming this.
* copy of his bank statement
The application form can be printed in English or Indonesia. If I was you I would fill out the English form and scan and email to him to copy, that way you know he has all the details correct.
Does you friend have any children - if so he should get a letter from who will be looking after them, stating that they are happy to allow him to travel and will be looking after his children during this time.
Hope this helps. It's usually a straight forward process, however because your friend is self employed it may be a little difficult.
