Complementary arak surprise

I had dinner at a restaurant in Sanur last year where we were given complementary drinks on arrival. I assumed they were fruit juice - and when I asked this was confirmed. Anyway, it turns out the waitress was wrong and they contained arak. Aside from the fact that I could have been pregnant or a recovering alcoholic and not wanted to drink alcohol, I avoid arak like the plague because of incidents like this one and resented being given it unknowingly.

Anyway, my point is that you may consume arak without even knowing it. And if this bar popular with expats had tainted arak, I don't see why bars in Bali wouldn't. Another reason to enjoy Bintang...
