You are right in thinking that a drive from the airport to Bangsal would give you a bit of a tour of Lombok. Either route is scenic toward the end, although my preference would be to go the coastal drive via Senggigi - as Imagem has mentioned you get some great coastal views and the road is very good. On the other hand, I love the view from the top of the Pusak pass, and there are heaps of monkeys on the side of the road that you can feed, but it is a long, steep winding road and you can get stuck behind trucks transporting goods (not nice).
Imagem would have a better idea than me as to the time from the airport as her husband regularly drives guests from Kuta down that way. I did it in September and I "think" it was about 2 hours, but maybe it was a bit more I really don't remember.
I was in a very comfortable, air-cond car. I would make sure whomever is doing your transfer is not planning on doing it in some old mini-bus.
