We always insure from the day we book and always take a fully comprehensive plan which should include "cancellation" that way you are covered should something unforseen occur.

We also tick the nil excess box, this usually costs a little extra ($25?)but can save you a lot of money if you have a family or have multiple claims and have to pay the first $100-$250 per event/claim.

I am not sure where you got "this cost approx. double if you book 6 months in advance" from?
I just did a trial check and booked from today (21st) for the 10 June 2012- 30 June 2012, which is 8 months in advance and it is still the same price we paid when we booked on the 14 July 2011 for January 1-21, 2012.

I will give you an example.

Both myself and my little darlin' are over 60.
We booked a fully comprehensive"travelsure plan TI" for 22 days, nil excess, paid an extra $37 for airline insolvency(an option)and total cost was $251.

As for which other boxes to tick such as medical pre existing conditions, motor bike rider, rental car insurance etc. that is virtually up to you.

I thought about ticking the pregnancy box, but what the heck I think I'll take a chance :))

Any more questions feel free to ask.
