We didn't walk on the beach itself, but along the road that runs along the beach. Went the same way you would be as we were all staying down around Jl Padma and Jl Melasti areas. There was a group of about 8 of us, half men and half women. The road is pretty well lit and there were other people around, and security outside most of the hotels that front the beach road along that stretch.
I probably wouldn't walk down along the water's edge at that time of night, but have always felt safe along the beach road at night. I actually walked along the stretch from the beach along Jl Padma on my own and wasn't at all concerned, but I'm always aware of who and what is around me, particularly when I'm alone.
It's less than a 10min walk from the Padma hotel. Not worth worrying about a taxi.
