In July -I was in Europe with my 17 yo daughter. Long story short...she got very ill. Paramedics at Heathrow, ambulance ride to hospital and banned from flying. Had used my Anz credit card to pay for flights (need to show $250 of your travel expenses have been put on the card).
They instantly took over. We were put up at the Hilton Heathrow -they paid for everything. Flights to Australia were fully booked through July and August (another story). They worked on getting us home -finally found us a direct flight one week later. Moved us to the Marriott to await the flight and paid for all expenses. All medical costs were covered as well.So from my own recent experience -if you have a gold or platinum credit card and pay for some of your trip on it -you are covered. They even rang to check on how my daughter was when we got home!!
