Now bear with me all for my explanation of an even better option. I was travelleing in Nairobi (Kenya), the capital city, and happened to be out one day without all my usual cash carrying devices so had to just carry the cash i had in my shorts. I happened to be wearing a pair that had side pockets at knee level (which had a zip on it). Initially concerned that i couldn't keep my hands over the pocket in crowded areas, what i found instead was that having your money at knee level means anyone that is trying to pick your pocket actually has to bend down to do so (this is much more noticable than just getting brushed up against). Being lower than hip height is really difficult to get to as your pocket is moving much more when you are walking...a moving target much harder for the dodgy pick pockets.
