I can believe that the dolphins leave the pen and return when it suits later.
We visited Monkey Mia (WA) a few months ago and the dolphins there return to the shore each day, if it suits, by choice. Only a set 5 are fed so the other dolphins come to shore for the look. They are not penned at shore. The others obviously enjoy the people interaction. (They are not touched by any humans). They also love to 'fly' in the water in front of the bow of the boat. Thats not taught, its their chosen fun.
