with every Bintang, every room rental, every motor bike hire, every tattoo and every trip to the Safari Park (not to mention every trip to the toilet!) we are contributing to the demise of the place we love.
A few weeks ago, when coming in to land from the south and approaching Uluwatu, the thick brown smog to a few hundred feet high over the southern part was plain to see.
You don't notice it when you are in the place, and even on the plane it seems to evaporate as you draw nearer....but it's there.
I guess this is "progress", and it's a shame.
After the bombings, everyone was sad because of the slow down of everything.
Now everyone is sad because of the popularity of the place.
Maybe it pays not to dwell on such things for too long, because there is an inevitability about it all, and tommorrows Bali will be as different from todays as todays is from yesterday.
