Yes, I've just found the exact same thing myself. I too was looking into getting an Australian motor bike licence as I wanted to be fully covered, heaven forbid if anything should happen.

Then, yesterday before going to far further with my Aust licence plan, I rang the travel insurance, to be told, and shown in the product disclosure statement, that I only need to wear a helmet, ride under a 200cc bike, and hold a current licence in the country I will be riding.

Woo hoo, watch out Bali, I'll be at the Denpasar Police station getting my licence..

But having said that, I agree that it depends on your insurance company, because I'm sure I have read somewhere that you must have a licence in your own country and international licence... But I'm happy to report, that my travel insurance is different....
