I'm a Yank also, going back for my 4th trip in Sept. for 30 days. I'm in SoCal so if you want some info, or for me to talk with your parents, I'd be glad to accomodate.
If your budget is $1500 for 10 days then you can live like a king. Four years ago we did a 30 day trip on the average of $30 per day per person for food/lodging/transportation. Now we budget about $50, only because we're a lot older than you and want to enjoy some ammenities.
Bali is a great place, and everyone will think you're an Aussie, not American. Like everyone else has said, it's safe if you keep your wits about you and your eyes open.
