Sanur can provide a lovely chilled introduction to Bali, unless he is all about the food or designer shopping, in which case you need to take him to Seminyak.
If he hates crowds, get him out of the south generally.
I'm sure you'll bring him around. I loathed the idea of Bali myself, before I was talked into going by a travel agent. I researched the hell out of my first trip (with help from this forum) and had such an amazing time I plan to go every year for the rest of my life!
