After 24trips to Bali we usually only book our first night and then make phone calls to the wonderful places we have found over the years. We have found that by just checking out accommodation ourselves we have found great budget places with fantastic service. We have stayed in a few less than desirable places but these have always been places we have booked without first seeing. Sometimes it might take an hour to find somewhere that meets your needs but it's no real problem.
And one new years eve we turned up at a legian hotel with no booking just found it by default, and it's now where we always stay when in legian.
I would say do it, no plans, there are too many people that are worried about what might be to experience what there is out there.
